The internet is the ultimate marketplace. Regular abstinence from social media is necessary for a proper mind cleansing.

Here are some of the deepest spiritual insights I downloaded from my last retreat:

  1. The mind is an illusion “I think therefore I am” is a popular quote that holds no truth to it. This statement concludes that the proof of our consciousness is our ability. In reality, consciousness exists independently of thoughts. How else would infants exist and interact with the world? “I am, therefore I think” is more accurate. You existed long before your mind formed. Every thought in your mind begins with the “I”. This I-sense is the battery of the ego. It is the foundation upon which other identities are built on. After careful introspection, you will realize that the feeling of being a separate entity is nothing but an idea that has infested the human mind. You are not a human experiencing the world. You are the entire Universe experiencing itself. Any time you receive a thought in your mind, that is a great opportunity for self-inquiry. Ask in your heart; “Who am I?” “What am I?”Be curious and intrigued enough to understand your own mind. You’ll start receiving ‘hints’ from your heart through silence.

  2. The thinker is an illusionEmo Philips famously said:"I used to think that the brain was the most fascinating part of the body, then I realized, ‘look who’s telling me that.”You are not any of the voices in your head. You are the screen of consciousness where these thoughts emerge from. You may think to yourself- “I am thinking”, but that is just another thought popping into your head. Inquire within yourself:"Where do my thoughts come from and where do they go?"

  3. Time is an illusionOur sophisticated imagination is both a gift and a curse. A strong memory means allows us to relive the past and cling to our traumas. A strong imagination allows us to create fears and anxieties for ourselves. The human mind is incapable of living in the present moment. It constantly oscillates between the past and the future. Yesterday is nothing but a fragment of your memory, and tomorrow is a fragment of your imagination. All your experiences are like writings on water. Reality is NOW. It is a continuous flow of Now-moments without a record. When the mind is completely silent, the Now is all that exists.

  4. Life is an illusionThere is a BIG difference between being woke, being awake, and being awakened. To awaken is to through the collective dream of the human consciousness. Life is an illusion. Not because we don’t exist. But because we mistake our psychological reality for actual Reality. In your psychological reality, you believe you are your body-mind. In actual reality, you are a soul possessing your body-mind for a brief period of time. This change in perspective is the key to awakening from the mass delusion of humanity.

  5. Death is an illusion The fear of death stems from a basic misunderstanding about the true nature of our existence. People have a fear of death because they are too attached to their physical bodies, relationships, and world accumulations. The truth is that living and dying happen simultaneously. Every moment you are alive is a moment closer to death. Death brings a forceful end to all things - the identities, ambitions, memories, attachments, and even the ego that clings to these things. Why put off the inevitable? Spirituality is the art of dying consciously. How? Detach from your body-mind and reconnect with the eternal Soul within you. Death kills the body and mind, but the Soul cannot be harmed. Meditation grounds in the Soul and deepens your conviction that you are beyond life and death. To transcend the mind is to transcend the fear of death and all other learned fears.

HOW TO HOST YOUR PERSONAL RETREAT

Scheduling your personal retreat is much easier than it sounds. Signs you need a spiritual retreat:

  • You lack a definite purpose

  • You feel overwhelmed with daily life

  • You’ve fallen out of love with yourself

  • You suffer from anxiety, depression, and insecurities

  • You need spiritual healing from a trauma or heartbreak.A spiritual retreat is what you need to reconnect with your god-self and your intuition.

A spiritual retreat will help you slow down life. Here’s how you can plan yours:Step 1: Begin by setting your intention. This is the most crucial part of the retreat. Once you've got a solid grasp on your "why," you've already kicked off a significant shift in your mindset. You must pinpoint the exact purpose behind your retreat so that your focus can be crystal clear. Jot down what you're aiming to experience or gain clarity on throughout this retreat. The more specific you get, the better the outcome.

Step 2: Plan the length of your retreat and schedule it in your calendar. Get everything you need in advance. The point of a retreat is to minimize engagement and exposure. Plan your menu and stock up on light, nutrition-packed eats. Avoid excess sugar and caffeine. Gather your tools for practice—think cushions, mats, candles, incense. Curate an environment that genuinely inspires you and makes you eager to take a seat on that meditation cushion. Also, decide what practices and activities you will be doing so you aren’t wasting time figuring things out.

Step 3: Write down your daily itinerary. Factor in your dedicated practice sessions, meal times, rest breaks, writing sessions, inspirational reading, yoga, and other hobbies that make you feel alive.

Craft a schedule that you can actually manage. Be firm but kind with yourself: not too rigid, but not too lax either. Here's a glimpse of what mine looked like. Use this as a template only:

  • 5:00 – 6:30 am: Yoga and meditation

  • 6:30 – 7:30 am: Long walk and jogs

  • 7:30 – 9:00 am: Clean up and Breakfast

  • 9:00 am – 12:00 pm: Reading and writing

  • 12:00 – 1:00 pm: Lunchtime

  • 1:00 – 3:00 pm: Seista

  • 3:00 - 5:00 pm: Miscellaneous activities

  • 5:00 – 6:00 pm: Evening meditation

  • 6:00 – 7:00 pm: Dinner delights

  • 7:00 – 9:00 pm: Social media

  • 9:00 – 10:00 pm: Cap off the day with a soothing hot bath before slipping into dreamland
